Product Town Hall for Domains (08/25/25)

Quick recap

The meeting focused on various domain management updates and features, including domain transfers, URL redirects, and analytics improvements for both lead ads and internal domains. The team discussed strategies for identifying and fixing 404 errors, with suggestions for creating logs and implementing redirects, while also exploring ways to enhance domain search functionality and user interface elements. Several agency-specific requests were addressed, including domain permissions, analytics tracking, and subdomain options, with the team agreeing to investigate and implement various improvements based on the feedback provided.

Domain Transfer and Analytics Updates

Madhav discussed several domain-related updates, including the launch of additional TLD purchases, domain auto-renewal control, and URL redirect unification. He announced that domain transfer functionality would be leaving the lab by mid-October, allowing users to transfer domains to other registrars. Madhav also revealed plans to enable domain transfers between sub-accounts and to introduce new analytics features for both lead ads and internal domains, including click success rates and response times.

404 Error Redirect Strategy Discussion

The team discussed identifying and redirecting URLs that generate 404 errors, particularly during website recreation. Tony suggested creating a log of URLs with 404 errors to identify those needing redirects, which Madhav agreed was a good approach. Ryan provided examples of common 404 scenarios, such as misspelled URLs or incorrect path variations, emphasizing the need to capture traffic for these cases. Madhav proposed setting up redirects or a default error page, and suggested implementing smart nudges to encourage users to set up redirects for frequently hit 404 URLs.

Domain Redirect Feature Discussion

Charles suggested adding a feature to list URL redirects under the domain management page, as it would be convenient for agencies using domains for redirect purposes. Madhav acknowledged the suggestion and mentioned that it is currently under internal discussion, with plans to keep Charles updated on any progress. Dea inquired about the ability to view the full URL when hovering over the target URL, to which Madhav confirmed that this feature would be available in the developed version. Ryan clarified that the discussed features are part of a design and not yet live.

Domain Transfer and Management Updates

Madhav explained that domains can be transferred between sub-accounts in High Level, but websites remain intact at their current location. He confirmed that domain transfers are working well, with Ryan reporting successful transfers. Madhav mentioned ongoing work to make domain connection more seamless across all providers, and asked for feedback on potential improvements to the domain management feature from an agency perspective.

Domain Management Feature Enhancements

Madhav discussed with DutchTexan and Charles about domain management features for agencies. DutchTexan requested the ability to give domains away for free to encourage user retention, while Charles highlighted the need for granular domain permissions and better analytics for agencies to track domain sales and adoption rates. Madhav acknowledged these points and noted them for implementation.

SaaS Domain Management Proposals

Tiyana proposed two ideas: allowing SaaS users without their own domain to set up a subdomain of the SaaS provider's domain, and offering a free domain with customizable terms through the SaaS configurator. Madhav supported Charles's idea of an agency view to monitor subaccount health and activity. Tamara raised a concern about limiting domain spending for clients in subaccounts, particularly for expensive domains, to prevent them from purchasing costly domains before transferring ownership.

Domain Search Feature Discussion

Madhav and Charles discussed domain search functionality, with Charles highlighting Namecheap's advanced domain search features including multiple TLD support, prefix/suffix appending, and domain hacks. Madhav acknowledged their own efforts to improve domain search results by increasing the number of displayed results from 15 to a higher number while making them more relevant.

Domain Management UI Enhancements

The team discussed domain settings and UI functionality. Charles explained that bulk actions are available for managing domain purchases through the "manage rebuilding" feature, though it's hidden and could be made more visible. Tiyana raised a concern about not being able to find URL redirect functionality in the new UI layout, and Madhav agreed to investigate the issue after reviewing her screenshot. The conversation ended with Anchal announcing an upcoming conversation and chat session.
